In the early 1900's, Boston was a hub for trading goods (and slaves) between New England, England, the Gold Coast and the Caribbean. Long story short, molasses from the Caribbean was shipped to Boston where it was used to sweeten baked beans. Thus, the city was nicknamed "Beantown".
